Positive Behaviour Support
Behaviour is a form of communication. When we slow down and get curious, we begin to understand what a person might be experiencing and expressing.
PBS is an evidence-informed, person-centred approach that looks at the environments people live in and works alongside whānau and teams. It focuses on understanding the environments people live in and working alongside whānau and teams to build positive social and communication skills. Prevention sits at the centre, shaping environments and support so fewer challenges arise and more meaningful interactions can happen.
This introductory course gives you the foundations of PBS. You’ll explore what sits underneath behaviour and how your responses can support safety, dignity, and connection.
Grounded in real-life care settings across Aotearoa, this course supports you to move from reacting to behaviour towards understanding it and responding with intention.

Why this course is important?
Positive Behaviour Support aligns with the standards that guide safe, respectful care in Aotearoa, including Ngā Paerewa Health and Disability Services Standards and the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights.
Support workers are expected to provide care that is safe, competent, and upholds each person’s dignity, communication, and right to be supported. Behaviour that challenges is part of the role. Without a clear approach, responses can become reactive, inconsistent, or shaped by stress, which can increase risk and move away from these standards.
Positive Behaviour Support gives you practical, evidence-informed strategies to understand what sits underneath behaviour, reduce escalation, and respond in ways that protect dignity, strengthen communication, and keep people safe. It supports you to meet expected standards of care with clarity, consistency, and intention.
