Self-Care in Care Work

This course supports anyone working in care and support roles to understand and respond to the impact of the work on their own wellbeing.
Grounded in real-life settings across Aotearoa, you will explore stress, fatigue, emotional load, boundaries, and burnout, alongside practical ways to care for yourself on shift and beyond.
You will learn how to recognise early signs that your hauora needs attention, and respond in simple, realistic ways that fit within your role.
The course introduces Te Whare Tapa Whā, helping you understand wellbeing across physical, mental and emotional, spiritual, and relational dimensions, and identify small actions to strengthen each area.
Because self care is central to how we care. It is part of how we protect dignity, build trust, and sustain ourselves in the work.

Why this course is important?

No matter the role you hold within the care and support sector, the work is meaningful and carries an enormous emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical load.
Support workers also deserve care. Without it, that load can build over time and begin to impact your hauora, your relationships, and the way you show up in the work.
Self care supports a sustainable career in this sector. It helps you stay connected to yourself while continuing to provide safe, respectful, and quality care.
