Enduring Power of Attorney
Understanding Enduring Power of Attorney is an important part of safe, rights-based care in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This course gives kaimahi a practical introduction to EPAs in care settings, including what an EPA is, who may be involved, and the difference between a Personal Care and Welfare EPA and a Property EPA.
Learners will explore how EPAs connect with capacity, consent, supported decision-making, privacy, documentation, and everyday care practice. The course also looks at how to keep the person receiving care involved wherever possible, even when an attorney has a formal role.
Through real-world examples and reflection, kaimahi will learn how to check who has authority, respond respectfully to attorneys and whānau, recognise when something feels unclear or unsafe, and escalate through the right pathway.
This course is designed for support workers across aged care, disability support, mental health, residential care, and in-home support. It supports practice that protects dignity, rights, safety, and mana while helping kaimahi stay clear about their role.

Why this course is important?
EPA situations can affect a person’s rights, choices, privacy, care, finances, and sense of control.
For kaimahi, understanding the basics helps prevent assumptions, protect dignity, and keep the person involved wherever possible. This course supports safe, rights-based practice by helping workers know what to check, when to document, and when to escalate for support.
