Sexuality and Dignity in Care

Sexuality and intimacy do not disappear when a person receives care. They remain part of identity, dignity, connection, privacy and what it means to be treated as a whole adult.

This course helps care and support workers respond to sexuality and intimacy in care with confidence, respect and clear professional boundaries. It explores the sensitive moments that can arise in everyday care, from intimate care and gender expression to relationships, consent, sexual expression, dementia and safeguarding concerns.

The focus is practical and grounded: how to protect dignity, avoid shame, recognise risk, uphold consent, and know when to document or escalate. Learners are supported to respond calmly and professionally, while keeping the person’s mana, safety and rights at the centre.

Why this course is important?

Sexuality, intimacy and dignity are part of whole-person care, yet these topics are often avoided because they can feel awkward, sensitive or difficult to respond to.

This course helps care and support workers recognise how sexuality shows up in everyday support: through privacy, intimate care, relationships, gender expression, consent, touch, grooming, body autonomy and emotional connection.

When workers respond with calm, respectful and professional practice, people are less likely to feel shamed, exposed or reduced to a task. They are more likely to feel safe, seen, and treated as adults with identity, preferences, rights and mana.

The course also supports workers to notice risk, uphold boundaries, document clearly and escalate concerns when consent, capacity, coercion or safeguarding is unclear.
